Introduction

Welcome to our mini-course on knot theory! The following graph shows how each of the sections depend upon one another. An arrow from box A to box B means that you must first read section A before you will be allowed to read section B. In order to prove that you have read a section, you will be required to pass an exercise on that topic.

The graph is coloured in the following way:

  • Green - Topics which you have read and passed an exercise on
  • Blue - Topics which you are allowed to read because you have fulfilled all the prerequisites
  • Red - Topics which you cannot yet read because you have not fulfilled all the prerequisites.

Each section also contains practice exercises which you can do in your own time (with pen and paper). Serious students of knot theory are encouraged to do as many of these extra exercises as possible, as they will provide a deeper understanding of the subject matter.

Along with these notes you will also find a Glossary of knot theory terms and a page of References to good textbooks.

We hope that you will enjoy this course! Click on a blue-coloured box to get started...
